Jacques Bessala, a peacekeeper,
was arrested on April 13, 2023 with three of his alleged accomplices by the Judicial Police. According to Commissioner Denis Nto, Deputy
Director of Criminal Investigations at the Judicial Police, the gang, which operated with two automatic pistols, specialised
in robbing pharmacies and bakeries. CRTV reports that the criminals were preparing to deliver a haul of medicines stolen the day before from the pharmacy in Ngoumou, a small town near Yaounde. Prior to this robbery, they managed to steal two vehicles and break into a bakery in Yaounde. However, the peacekeeper, Jacques Bessala, used his status to get past the police controls. In addition to the two automatic pistols, the alleged thugs used a whole range of equipment including hammers and nail pullers. The alleged gang of pharmacy burglars was tracked down as part of the “sieve” operation initiated by the General Delegation for National Security, through the Directorate of Judicial Police, as a prelude to the 51st edition of the bank holidays of 20 May 2023. The four alleged robbers, Njine Njine Ricky Gédéon (gang leader), 45 years old, engineer; Claude Atanga, 43 years old, mechanic, computer specialist; Ezekiel
Nassou 37 years old, driver; and Jacques Bessala 25 years old, police officer, are in the premises of the Judicial Police Directorate in Yaounde.
