The 23rd edition of the cop’s competition is underway
since Saturday on the campus of the University
of Ngaoundéré. Since April 29, athletes from 23 universities take part in this annual meeting of cultural mixing and relaxation. After
three years of interruption due to the pandemic, the university games are back with more vigour and enthusiasm from both the administration and the athletes. In launching the 23rd edition, the member of the government accompanied
by other senior figures in the world of sports urged competitors
to seek excellence while promoting doping-free games. “I urge you to strive for excellence, go for medals at all costs and not at all prices,” he said in his speech. He added, “I plead for healthy University
Games, no disease of any kind.
On the ground, health actors are mobilised to provide care to the athletes. The team of the University
of Ngaoundéré’s Medical and Social Centre, supported by the Ngaoundéré Regional Hospital Centre, the Ngaoundéré Regional Hospital and other colleagues from other universities, is watching over the situation so that no false note is recorded. On the playgrounds, medical teams are mobilised to take immediate charge of cases. These teams are supported by the local representation of international
organisations such as the Cameroonian Red Cross which provides assistance in the management
of cases. On the third day of the games, the various institutions taking part in the competition are already showing their ambitions.
Medals
This is the case of the University of Yaounde 1, which on the evening of April 30 already had 9 medals, including 6 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze. It is followed by the Siantou
University Institute which has 7 medals including 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze. The table is completed
by the University Institutes of the Gulf of Guinea and the Coast, which have respectively 6 and the University of Yaounde 2. In the absence of the National Institute of Youth and Sports (INJS) which has dominated the University Games for years, the universities will now compete against each other. Among the latest universities
newly created by the Head of State, the University of Ebolowa is making a positive impression by already winning 1 gold, 1 silver and 04 bronze medals and occupying the 8th place. The host university is struggling to get out of the water and has only one (01) gold and one bronze.
