The Mayor of Mamfe Council, Robertson Tabechong Ashu, has made a solemn appeal for immediate action to address the deplorable state of the hospital. According to residents of Mamfe, the district hospital is in a catastrophic state and cannot provide the necessary healthcare to the population. Patients are forced to travel to neighboring towns like Kumba, Limbe, and Buea to receive adequate treatment.

This appeal comes at a time when the resources and responsibilities of the Ministry of Public Health have recently been transferred to local authorities to improve healthcare delivery at the local level, strengthen the decentralization process, and improve access to medical services in the Southwest Region.

According to the Mayor, the Mamfe District Hospital is in a calamitous state, a local healthcare facility struggling to serve the population of Mamfe Council and surrounding communities since its destruction in 2022 due to the crisis.

The destruction of the hospital, which mainly serves as a healthcare provider for Mamfe Council and surrounding communities, has left thousands of people without access to essential healthcare. The Mayor expressed deep concerns about the hospital’s inability to manage even basic medical cases, forcing residents to travel to neighboring towns like Kumba, Limbe, and Buea for treatment.

“Our people are suffering, the hospital is not adequately equipped to manage complex cases, and if you have a small complication, they will have to transfer you to Limbe or Kumba for treatment,” Mayor Ashu said. “This makes it even difficult to access treatment with the long distance and security concerns,” Mayor Ashu lamented. The Mayor explained the challenges faced by residents, particularly in the context of the armed conflict that has made traveling hazardous for many years.

The destruction of this hospital, noted the Mayor, has placed an enormous burden on the small preventive healthcare facility in the area, which was never designed to handle complex medical conditions. Although the current healthcare facility is not equipped with the necessary infrastructure and personnel to handle emergencies and critical conditions, the Mayor called for immediate action to rehabilitate the Mamfe District Hospital.

The Mayor also emphasized the importance of rebuilding the Mamfe District Hospital to improve healthcare delivery in the Southwest Region of Cameroon, particularly in the context of the armed conflict that has affected the region for many years.

Mamfe Council, located in the Southwest Region of Cameroon, is facing a severe health crisis due to the deplorable state of the district hospital. Residents of the council are suffering due to the lack of basic healthcare, and local authorities are called upon to act to rehabilitate the hospital and improve healthcare in the region.
