Cameroon joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Cancer Day yesterday, February 4, 2025, renewing its commitment to the fight against this silent killer. In Adamaoua, although public activities were not organized, cervical and breast cancer prevention and screening activities continue in health facilities in the region.

World Cancer Day, celebrated on February 4th each year, which is an initiative of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), aims to raise awareness and mobilize as many people as possible around one of the greatest health challenges, in order to avoid thousands of deaths related to Cancer. This year’s theme, “United by the One”, is in line with this logic.

In Adamaoua, an area where the reflexes of going to the hospital are not always the best shared thing within the community, a device, the thermoablator has been integrated into the gynecology department of the regional hospital of Ngaoundéré. According to the head of this department, Doctor Achille Nana, all women who come for gynecological consultations are automatically screened. The goal is to detect precancerous lesions very early in order to facilitate treatment. According to the explanations, the thermoablator is in the form of a needle connected to a generator that delivers an alternating current diffused into the tissues with the lesions. As the cells heat up, they are destroyed. This prevents the lesions from developing into cancer. This device acquired thanks to the National Committee for the Fight against Cancer supports the efforts of the staff of this department who work daily in the search for cases.

The introduction of this equipment is part of the desire to fight against this disease that claims victims every year. Through cervical and breast cancer screening activities at the Ngaoundéré regional hospital, the idea is not to wait for Pink October to intensify the fight.
