A career cut short too soon due to a serious injury at a sporting event. Cases of sudden death recorded in our stadiums. Yet medical science is no mystery. The Cameroon Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine (ACAMES), is organising the first annual conference on sports and health in Yaounde from May 9 to 10, 2023, with the aim of finding the causes of the evil in order to curb it, if not eradicate it. The conference will be held in the hall of the National Order of Physicians of Cameroon (ONMC) under the theme: “Impact of manual therapy on the health and recovery of athletes ». This therapy raises a host of questions. Why do we practice sport? Everyone wants to run in order to prevent ageing, but what are the modalities for practising this activity? This is the main focus of the annual sports medicine conference, which starts today. For this edition, two sessions will be on the agenda: “a plenary session in communication with the eminent scientists who are already here. On the second day, we will have two workshops: a workshop on first aid and on the second day, the participants will work on the new approach to athletic preparation of sportsmen
and women and the training workshop,” explains the expert. Experts in sports medicine from Canada, France, Belgium and Morocco will take part in this scientific event. In Cameroon, coaches, trainers, managers of leisure centres, physiotherapists, nurses and sports doctors who are active and especially journalists are also expected. For Prof. Josué Bissou Mahop, national president of ACAMES, the annual medical conference is unique. According to the resident representative of the French Societies of Sports Medicine and Sports Traumatology of Cameroon, the themes
addressed will be related to nutrition, psychology, traumatology and especially to the athletic preparation of the athlete from new methodological approaches of metrology, new methodological approaches of GPS training. In addition, the Vigipirate health plan for major competitions will be demonstrated and taught. And the feeding protocol that one must take when one wants to participate in a health walk, how one must feed and hydrate oneself? These are all additional ingredients that will be examined during this conference. “We will be able to show and teach the Vigipirate health plan for covering major competitions and the nutrition protocol that should be given when you decide to take part in a health walk,” explains the sports medicine specialist. It is a medical conference that is primarily concerned with mass sport, because in the 10 regions of Cameroon, people practice sport every day. Recommendations During this conference, suggestions
will be made for the equipment of the infirmaries; the vita courses. “We will give recommendations to all those who participate in this activity. These recommendations will enable them to keep their figure, to lose weight, to have a good concentration during work”, he confided. In addition to these recommendations, participants will receive information on sports performance. “We insist on new methodological approaches to the preparation of athletes, a sports performance diet, how to minimise accidents on the playground,”
he adds. The sports physician has a duty to know that the athletes provided to the coaches are in good health. He or she must ensure that they are eating properly and in a balanced way for a quick recovery to produce a performance. The sports physician must establish
a relationship of trust with the athlete in order to find out about his or her medical history and problems, sometimes even family problems, in order to find a solution. He is therefore the bridge between the coaches, the players and the specialists so that if there is a problem, he knows who to turn to.
