End. The 4th Congress of the Cameroon Society of Nephrology ended on Thursday 28 April 2023. The next meeting is scheduled for 2025. And, during the two days of activities, from 27 to 28 April 223, participants were educated
on several aspects of this health specialty. For example, the therapeutic education of the dialysis patient; the nutrition of the haemodialysis patient; the monitoring of diabetes during chronic renal disease; the spectrum
of chronic renal disease during diabetes; the treatment of diabetic renal disease… In addition
to the exchanges and sharing
of experiences, a large space was given to partners to exhibit the different products they have in the framework of the treatment
of renal disease, or any other pathology related to the field of nephrology. “We are exhibiting
an anti-anemic drug that allows those who are below 12, the hemoglobin level, to reach the level. This drug is of the injectable
type,” said an exhibitor.
“Challenges of nephrology in sub-Saharan Africa”. This is the theme that guided the congress. Beyond some technical and practical
aspects that were elucidated,
the real problem in this sector
remains the lack of balance in the distribution of nephrologists throughout the national territory.
“We have about thirty nephrologists
in Cameroon. But they are all grouped in Douala and Yaounde. Yet there are haemodialysis
centres in other regions. We also have the non-treatment of patients who are not yet on dialysis,” said the founding African
president of the nephrology society, Professor Gloria Ashutantang.
Thus, the thirty-four nephrologists in Cameroon are distributed as follows: 1 nephrologist
in Adamaoua, 10 in the Centre, 2 in the East, 14 in Douala,
1 in the North-West, 1 in the South, 2 in the South-West, and 3 in the West. The Far North region has no nephrologist.
Kidney diseases
According to the data revealed during the colloquium, in 2022, Cameroon recorded 1574 haemodialysis
patients with 495 deaths. Some statistics related to the management of hypertension
were also revealed to the general public. For example, Garoua
reported 400 hypertensives and 336 in Yaounde. It should be recalled that nephrology is a medical specialty that aims to prevent, diagnose and treat kidney
diseases. The meeting was attended by the President of the Cameroonian Society of Nephrology,
Prof. François Jérôme Kazec.
