On January 21, 2025, the Ministers of Health of Russia and Zimbabwe, Mikhail Murashko and Douglas Mombeshora, signed an agreement on cooperation in the health sector. This partnership, which marks an important step in the relations between the two countries, focuses on the training of health professionals, the supply of medical products and the transfer of technologies.

According to the statement issued by the Russian Ministry of Health, the agreement provides for several areas of cooperation. These include the treatment of infectious and non-infectious diseases, as well as the supply of medical products, with the possibility of developing their production locally, on Zimbabwean soil. The two sides also agreed to promote the exchange of knowledge and technologies between Russian and Zimbabwean scientists.

Russian Minister Mikhail Murashko welcomed the agreement as “a good start for further development”, stressing the importance of sustainable cooperation in the health sector. He said Russia would continue to train personnel for Zimbabwe’s health system. Currently, 91 Zimbabwean students are studying medicine in Russia, a collaboration that is expected to strengthen as training programmes are expanded.

This agreement represents a concrete step towards improving health infrastructure in Zimbabwe, a country facing many challenges in the health sector, while strengthening ties between Moscow and Harare.
